“Niall Kinsella-Ready And Waiting”

$

Sunday morning, 11am, 3 hours on the road and no sleep to speak of the night before. The post-shoot thought process of the previous days job with LJ Newton and Jade Kealy still fresh in our minds, it was time to hit the reset button and start all over again. We find ourselves clambering up the stairs of Image Fitness Studio in Swords, North County Dublin, to a meet a friend of Irish Muscle and veteran of the game, Niall Kinsella. I was in two minds about how necessary this shoot was to conduct in this time frame, and at such a volatile stage in the diet phase of any competing bodybuilder. There is always a chance that a working connection with the athlete may be too demanding given the exhaustion levels each sportsman goes through in the weeks preceding a competition. What if he’s just too tired, too starved of carbohydrates and essential nutrients that he can’t provide the patience and enthusiasm required to get the job done? But my doubts were misplaced as Nialls usual pro attitude shone through and as a testament to his passion and professionalism, he shook off the carb crash blues and hammered out an all over body workout to round up his training regime for the week.

Niall Kinsella’s history in the sport has been well documented and publicized. He acted as a exemplary ambassador for the sport when his return was the focus point for an episode of “Baz’s Extreme Worlds” in the run up the last years NABBA Mr.Ireland. This TV show forced the nations viewers to take an inside look at a sport that few outside of its realm understand. The extreme levels of discipline and perseverance required at this level would humble the strictest diet savvy and the daily training regimen would gas out many professional athletes, but it’s all in a days work for the likes of Niall and his peers in this sport.

Taking us through his home away from home, it’s immediately clear that the members of Image Fitness Studio are here to train hard and heavy. And with shapes such as Niall’s being an everyday sight it’s no wonder that his own ambitions have become contagious element of what keeps this gym on the map as a hardcore facility for those with the required state of mind.

Niall and I spoke briefly about his early days and when he was bitten by the bug that will see him walk onto stage in the Bord Gais Theatre on Saturday the 16th of June. He recalled being a schoolboy on a double decker bus that would take a route past Atlas Gym on Talbot Street. And from the vantage point of the top deck Niall could peer downstairs and see the overdeveloped calf muscles of the cities hallmark bodybuilders. Taking no prisoners, this gym defined hardcore on many levels and was certainly a pivotal influence on his attitude to training and his aspirations for where it could take him.

Niall has spoken publicly about his departure from training and as above his return to competition was documented on state TV. But what many people don’t know about Niall is the shape he is in right now. I’ve never witnessed someone so conditioned yet so stacked with muscle and with such outstanding proportions. During his workout for this weeks video he removed his sweater and caused a notable tone to grip the other members of Image Fitness Studio. It could only be described as a silent gasp, quickly followed by a communal push to lift that bit heavier and push that bit harder, freshly inspired by the physique and condition of their resident mass monster.

Below are two images that myself and Niall worked on and chose from a set we have been gunning to carry out for many months. This athlete is carrying so much detail on his body right now that it could require twice as many light sources to truly highlight the work he has put in. But as a subtle teaser for what the Irish Team are bringing this Saturday we hope you are as excited as we are to cheer on Niall Kinsella and all the members of the team who will proudly represent Ireland this coming Saturday 16th of June, at the NABBA Worlds, right here in our own backyard at the Bord Gais Theatre in Dublin.

Dan O’Brien: Interview

Irish Muscle: Dan, it’s been a chaotic 2012 for you. Quickly run us through the highlights of last years highs and lows!

Dan O’Brien: Well I moved to Galway in December 2011, which I thought was a bad move but being around so many competitive athletes made me want to take training to the next level.

IM: So you jumped in the deep end pretty quickly by entering the spring classic last april. Where did you place?

Dan: I was sort of pushed into doing the spring classic and had only dieted for 9 weeks. I managed to place 4th out of 32 competators, so not bad for my first showing but unfortunately not in the top 3.

IM: What motivated you to come back so soon and so strong for the NABBA Mr.Ireland?

Dan: Well a mate of mine insisted that I roll with the contest rebound, keep up a bit of cardio, eat a monstrous amount of food and grow. So thats what happened! I started the diet for the Mr Ireland at the same weight as when I started for the spring classic but with a lot less bodyfat to manage.

IM: So you hit the ground running after the spring classic. Knowing that sights were set for NABBA and what work had to be done, you walked away with Mr.Ireland Class 2. Did you believe in yourself when it came to show time?

Dan: *laughs* I did leading up to it then I saw the guys back stage and was like “uh oh”. I didn’t feel that I was ripped enough as my condition was 5% off which I rectified for the Mr.Universe, so when I won my class I couldn’t believe it. I am great friends with all the guys I competed against and they all have great physiques, I’m still humbled by the victory.

IM: And humbled you have remained, even after winning Class 2 Mr.Ireland, then the Cellucor Battle with Irish Muscle and competing at the Mr.Universe. You’ve had a very strong year and you’ve been consistently on the rise, what can we expect from you in 2013?

Dan: Well I was over the moon to be sponsored by Cellucor,  although I didn’t place as high as I would have liked at the Mr.Universe, I know it was my own doing. I’d really like to win my class again and get the chance to go back to the Mr.Universe.

IM:
How’s your daily nutrition overview looking as of late Dan?

Dan: At the minute I’m putting away 630g clean carbs, 400g protein and minimal fats (I still have abdominals and obliques). I just keep growing so I’m hoping the end result will be me cracking into the top 8 at the Universe or at the Europeans, provided I do well in either the Mr.Ireland or Nationals.

IM: Sounds like solid foundations are well in place to come in strong at those events. Will you be taking time out to attend any other national fitness events taking place this year?

Dan:  Well I’ll be at the Spring Classic and Mr.Cork but more of a spectator and representative of Cellucor. Anyone reading this should feel free to come and say hi.

IM:So your undoubtadly going to be competing in NABBA again this year I take it. Any other organizations in mind?

Dan:
I will most likely go for NABBA because if I get to be 93kg ripped, then that’s cool because it’s a height class. Where as with RIBBF I’d have to gamble, by either sacrificing 3kg of muscle and do the under 90kg or go for the over 90kg and be up against guys who could be coming in at 110kg! It’s not all about mass but a 110kg guy is gonna attract more attention than a 93kg right?

IM: Well if you can improve on last years size and condition then the sky is limit for you in 2013 and beyond. Never say never! Your inspiring bodybuilders, young and old, up and down the country with your success and work ethic. What advice can you give to someone considering competitive bodybuilding as a personal venture?

Dan: *laughs* Thanks Paul. Competing in bodybuilding you have to treat it like a job. You have to eat every meal, get every workout in, listen to your body and micromanage your calorie intake. You have to train like a beast even though you may feel like sleeping, but most of all you MUST enjoy it. Sometimes it’s not until all the work is done you actually think “wow, I’m proud that I got through on 80g carbs a day and never broke”. That shows strong mental attitude. Like Dorian Yates said, “Think of it like you’re building a house, every meal is another brick laid, every cardio session, every workout and you’ll get there. Build your house.”

IM: That certainly gives perspective to the “building” aspect of bodybuilding! It’s been a pleasure as always, thanks for taking the time out to talk to us Dan, we look forward to seeing you back on stage in 2013 and accompanying you on your journey to getting there.

Dan: Always a pleasure Paul!

We are also introducing Miss Bikini class. Once again we will be accepting entries for Men’s Athletic Class with WFF (classic rules apply) which is considered as a new discipline in response to the increasing demand for competitions for men who prefer, unlike bodybuilders, to develop a less muscular, yet athletic and aesthetically pleasing physique. In Men’s Fitness and Athletic-Bodybuilding, the emphasis is placed on a muscular athletic-looking physique, assessed by comparisons of four quarter turns, 6 compulsory poses -designed for physiques with less muscular body-mass compared to bodybuilders- and athletic ability, assessed during a bodybuilder like routine.
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 170 CM CATEGORY: maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100 + 2 kg
(Example: A competitor, who is 172 cm tall, may weigh a maximum of 74 kg)
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 175 CM CATEGORY: maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100 + 4 kg
(Example: A competitor, who is 178 cm tall, may weigh not more than 82 kg)
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 180 CM CATEGORY maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100 + 6 kg  (Example: A competitor, who is 180 cm tall, may weigh not more than 86 kg)
- OVER 180 CM CATEGORY (this category has 3 sub height/weight)  180 – 190 cm = body height [cm] minus 100 + 8 kg (i.e. height 189 cm max. weight 89 + 8 = 97 kg)  190 – 198 cm = minus 100 + 9 kg (i.e. height 197 cm max. weight 97 + 9 = 106 kg)
Over198cm =minus100+10kg (i.e. height 204 cm max. weight 104 + 10 = 114 kg)

The Total package of the “Toned” Miss Figure Class should display an athletic level of development presenting a balanced, symmetrical developed figure, considering the condition of the skin and the skin tone, with the ability to present confidence, poise and grace. Judging criteria will be for a “Toned” Figure and not “physique” or “trained” Figure category – (Muscularity, vascular, muscular definition and/or diet leanness will not be considered acceptable). Competitors will be assessed as to the level of overall tone, achieved through athletic endeavours. The figure should have a round and firm appearance with small amount of body fat. Competitors cannot be excessively muscular and should be free from deep muscle separation and /or striations.

The Head Judge will make considerations as to whether or not to remove any competitor that displays a look that is “too hard”. (Anyone that is considered too hard for the “Toned” figure, will be given the opportunity to enter the Figure.
The Competition Presentation will consist of the following: Quarter Turns – The general presentation during the quarter turns will consist of competitors presenting themselves with poise, self-confidence and posture. Although they will be in a semi tense stance the judges are looking for a “total package” and competitors are warned against adopting any stance that tries to emulate too much muscularity.
Followed by – Any 1 favourite pose at front, left side, back and finally right side. Each competitor will then be required to do an individual posing routine (60 seconds duration).
Compare: Nigel Gordon Rae Judges Chairman: Bryan Robinson Special Guest Stars.

TBC Morning show/ pre-judging tickets are available on the day to buy on the door and are €10.
Evening tickets €27.50 for the evening show only, available at the Olympia Theatre and Vitamin Shops around the country and ticket master: Or directly from siobhan@bodybyrne.ie Limited places available, so book them well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Following on from the success of the recent RTE screening of his epic documentary ‘The Raj in the Rain’, director Patrick Cooney rapidly presents us with a follow up in the bulging muscular shape of DEADLIFT.Screening this coming Sunday 6th October at 4pm, it chronicles the intense world of an inner city Dublin gym. Characters as rich and complex as the aristocrats of ‘Raj’ demand your attention and respect, Christy Byrne 67 years old ignores knee cap replacement surgery to punish his ageing body with ferocious squats. Star of Arnold Schartzeneggers break through film ‘ Pumping Iron’ Christy reminisces about his pal Arnie’s heyday in between caustic observations about the pumped up young guns who share his gym space. One such gun, Tom Staunton just keeps getting bigger and bigger much to Christys disgust and is heading to compete for the Mr World and Mr Universe titles. There’s conflict, there’s jeopardy, there’s bad blood and dark humour. Earlier this year ‘Raj’ sold out the IFI with a queue around the block. DEADLIFT will do the same. Don’t be left out .
